Introduction to the Lunar New Year

The Lunar year calendar is marked in cycles of 12, with each year being represented by an animal. Every 12-year cycle is also ascribed an element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water) and Yin or Yang characteristics. These features determine the characters of the animals so that, in a cycle of 60 years, no two animals are the same. 2007 will be the Year of the Pig, and, according to Chinese astrologists, it will be the Year of the Golden Pig - a particularly good year to give birth.
